This page discusses about article titles on the Animation Wiki.

Media and franchises[]

  • Basically, no parentheses is used, unless different from other versions/iterations.
    • Remove Incorrect: The Powerpuff Girls (1998 TV series)
    • Keep Correct: The Powerpuff Girls
    • Remove Incorrect: SpongeBob SquarePants (TV series)
    • Keep Correct: SpongeBob SquarePants
    • Remove Incorrect: The Lion King (2019)
    • Keep Correct: The Lion King (2019 film)
  • If so, they must be disambiguated differently:
    • Any television series must be disambiguated by using (TV series) instead of (series)
    • Any films must be disambiguated by using (film) instead of (movies)
    • Any franchises must be disambiguated by using (franchise)
  • If no consensus for a main topic, (TV series) or (film) can be used to disambiguate.
  • Do not capitalize the text in the parentheses, unless necessary.
    • Remove Incorrect: Minions (Film)
    • Keep Correct: Minions (film)
    • Exceptions include if the film is from a different company.
  • If there are two films with the same title but share the same year, use ([year] film) instead of ([year])
    • Remove Incorrect: The Lion King (2019)

Characters[]

  • An article's title should contain the first and last names, typically known to the viewers.
    • Remove Incorrect: Angelica Charlotte Pickles
    • Keep Correct: Angelica Pickles
    • Remove Incorrect: Sandra Cheeks
    • Keep Correct: Sandy Cheeks
    • A single name may only be used in article titles if they are commonly referred to by that name. (i.e. Blossom)
    • Preferably, commonly-known first names are used (i.e. Carl Casagrande instead of Carlino Casagrande)
  • Do not use middle initials in article titles.
    • Remove Incorrect: Helga G. Pataki
    • Keep Correct: Helga Pataki
    • An exception is that middle initials can only be used if commonly known (other than common names) as that name. (i.e. Sheldon J. Plankton)
  • Commonly referred names/nicknames should not be used in article titles, unless commonly known that way.
    • Remove Incorrect: Grunkle Stan
    • Keep Correct: Stanley Pines
    • Remove Incorrect: Mr. Krabs
    • Keep Correct: Eugene H. Krabs
  • If characters share the same name, disambiguate them by show/film/franchise instead of in-universe occupation.
    • Remove Incorrect: Pearl (Crystal Gem)
    • Keep Correct: Pearl (Steven Universe)
    • Remove Incorrect: Jake (Pirate)
    • Keep Correct: Jake (Jake and the Never Land Pirates)
    • Remove Incorrect: Molly (Guppy)

    • If a character has a same name as another but has a surname, a surname must be included. Similarly, a title can be used instead if a character has one.

People[]

  • Only names known to the media can be used. Use only currently credited names.

Companies[]

  • Full names of the companies (excluding "Inc.", "Corporation", "LLC", etc.) should be used. Use only currently-known names.
    • Remove Incorrect: Pixar
    • Keep Correct: Pixar Animation Studios
    • Keep Correct: Hanna-Barbera (since it has been known by many names, like Hanna-Barbera Productions, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, etc.)

Capitalization[]

  • As a general rule, names of works, characters, and personal names are capitalized.
    • Remove Incorrect: Toy story
    • Keep Correct: Toy Story
    • Remove Incorrect: Squidward tentacles
    • Keep Correct: Squidward Tentacles
    • Remove Incorrect: Rob paulsen
    • Keep Correct: Rob Paulsen
  • Only the first letter of each word should be capitalized. There are some instances (see examples below) where more than one (usually two) letter can be capitalized.
    • Remove Incorrect: Grey Delisle
    • Keep Correct: Grey DeLisle
    • Remove Incorrect: Spongebob Squarepants
    • Keep Correct: SpongeBob SquarePants

  • No parentheses is needed if the character, film, or TV series is very popular.
